Winemaker's Notes
Grown mostly from the Coombsville region in southern Napa Valley, the Modus cab blend is always a barrel selection of my finest Cabernet Sauvignon vineyards from my favorite new French oak barrels.
The grapes were triple sorted down to the berry, fermented in both small open top fermenters and new French oak barrels, and matured in 75% new French oak for 22 months. The 2009 vintage was extremely challenging and stressful due to early rains threatening to negatively affect wine quality. With the knowledge that the wines weren't being “made” in the vineyard, we had to really “make” them in the winery. Where we would normally do 8 to 10% bleeds, we went with a financially horrifying 25% in an effort to regain the concentration that the Modus wines are known for... and we are glad we did as the 2009 vintage is shaping up to be one of our best yet!
