2004
Greer Vineyard ~ Rutherford
Located on Manley Lane nestled between the Staglin and Morrisoli Vineyards.
Clone 7 on AXR rootstock
This 18 year old, tiny seven acre vineyard was a winemaker's dream come true... older vines producing extremely small yields with clusters smaller than a fist. The result was ex-trak-schion. Within thirty minutes of crushing, the must was literally painting my arm with a dark redness. The resulting wine was dense in color, amazingly perfumed in aromatics, and fleshy in texture. Definitely the muscle behind the 2004 Napa Valley blend in its 50% contribution.

2004
Batuello Vineyard ~ St. Helena
Located on Elhers Lane behind Elhers Winery
Martha's Clone on St. George rootstock

Although the Batuello vineyard has been around for quite a while, we chose to take from a younger block in an effort to add a bit of complexity and elegance to the more powerful Rutherford fruit.

2005
Preston Vineyard ~ Rutherford
Located between the Star Vineyard and Peju Vineyards on Highway 29
Clone 7 on Paulson rootstock
A positive reassurance of why I love clone 7, this wine is big with lots of personality after only 2 weeks in barrel. Bright red fruit tones and a generous aromatic profile lead to a delightfully long finnish. With only 17 months and 2 weeks left in the barrel, I look forward to watching this wine develop.

2005
Nemerever Vineyard ~ Oakville
Located on the Oakville Crossroad between Groth, Silver Oak, and Plumpjack
See's clone on 3309 rootstock
I stumbled across this winegrower in a blind tasting during my job as a waiter at La Toque in Rutherford. The moment I tried this wine I told myself... Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignon, and, Oh My GOD, I have to make wine from this vineyard. Thank God persistence pays off because the Nemerevers originally declined selling fruit to me. However, now that I'm in, I want to honor the Nemerevers by making a truly beautiful wine from their absolutely gorgeous vineyard. Planted in 1992, this mature vineyard has been a pleasure to work with due to the quality of fruit and beautiful scenery that it delivers. The longer, cooler growing season in 2005 lead to a later harvest than normal allowing for full phenolic maturity and amazing flavor development. The wine is basically an infant at this point of my tastings but it is looking like the Nemerever wine is going to be the source of elegance in the 2005 blend.
Tasting notes to come...

2005
Rocca Vineyard ~ Coombsville
Located in the soon-to-be-known-as Tulocay AVA
Clone 4 on 101-14 rootstock

Anyone who knows Mary Rocca knows how nice a lady she is, and I also thank her for taking a chance on a newcomer such as myself. However, for Mary the decision to sell to me came quite quickly and easily. At first I thought she said yes because I was waiting on her at La Toque when I asked her, but in her answer I learned her true motive... she said, "absolutely, us little people have to stick together", now that's cool. As an added bonus, the vineyard management situation at Rocca is ideal in that there is absolute dedication to one grower.

When you walk through the vineyard, the benefits of such a situation is self evident with immaculate vines, beautiful fruit, and amazing balance. I want clone 4 for its big, rich, dense, and powerful character... which is exactly what I got from the Rocca - Hearthstone Vineyard. By far the darkest and most dense wine I made in 05, this clone 4 gives a funky earth and chocolate tone backed up by a touch of leather and cassias.
